No one loved match day more than John. Win, lose, or draw, his enthusiasm was contagious. He stood on the pitch with arms spread wide, soaking in the roar of the crowd, with that trademark grin crinkling his eyes. "This is what Saturdays are for," he told Kyle. That memory captures his whole spirit: open-hearted, full of life, and spreading warmth to everyone around him.

No one had greener fingers or more patience than John. He spent countless quiet mornings potting cuttings, chatting to the robins, and making sure the grandchildren had miniature trowels to help. He always insisted that "a garden is just love made visible through patience."

Hiking the Yorkshire Dales with his handmade ash walking stick

Rain or shine, John was on the moors every weekend he could muster. On one notorious foggy walk across Kinder Scout, when the rest of us were cold and grumpy, John calmly pulled peppermint humbugs from his waxed jacket pocket and announced that getting lost was merely nature offering an unmapped adventure.

John believed that anything worth making was worth making to outlive us all. The workshop always smelled of linseed oil, beeswax, and wood shavings. When Kyle joined the family, John spent hours teaching him how to sharpen a chisel properly and sharing tea.
